The Build
Architecture firm, Cynergi, appointed Stirlin as main contractor, on behalf of Kedleston Group, to carry out the expansion and refurbishment of a disused secondary school in Handsworth, Birmingham, into a purpose-designed school (Oakbridge School) to provide a supportive, inclusive environment for autistic learners.
Kedleston Group are specialist providers of autism, SEMH, and individual additional needs schools and children’s homes throughout England. The school provides a safe learning environment for children and young people with educational, social and emotional needs associated with autism.
The project included a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing 3-storey building, including demolition of internal structures, replacement of all windows, extensive external works, and a full internal fit-out. Every element of the scheme is being tailored to create a safe, modern and engaging space that meets the unique needs of its future pupils.
The school now boasts an impressive range of features, including sensory and occupational therapy rooms, a professional recording studio, performance hall with stage, multi-use sports hall with climbing wall, fully equipped science and technology labs and landscaped outdoor area with sensory garden.
These specialist features have been thoughtfully designed to enrich the learning experience and support the personal development of each student.
